Rheinhessen is called "Land of the Thousand Hills". This motto reflects the landscape of gentle, rolling hills, where grapevines grow as far as the eye can see.
Here a new generation of young, highly qualified winegrowers produce grapes of highest quality, which are the basis for excellent wines.
The climatic conditions for viticulture are optimal. With warm summers, mild winters, little rainfall and 1,700 hours of sun each year, the region is one of Germany's warmest wine-growing regions.
Rheinhessen has a diverse soil profile, which enables the cultivation of a great number of grape varieties. The proportion of white to red varietals is 70 to 30%.
The region is famous for Riesling as well as the traditional variety Silvaner.
Today Rheinhessen is internationally well known, especially the Rhine Terrace near Nierstein, the so-called "Roter Hang" (Red Slope), because of the presence of red slate.
